Removing Spot Welds
By unknown author return to index

Spot welds can be removed by one of these two methods:

Spot Weld Cutter
Specially made cutters are available that will totally drill-out spot welds without damaging the second layer of sheet metal. Only a bit of grinding is required to finish the job. Because the sheet metal below the item being removed is not harmed, this is the preferred method. However, the cutters are expensive and may wear out quickly. Cutters may be purchased at Eastwood Company and other tool retailers.

Standard Drill Bit
With a regular drill and 3/8" or 1/2" bit, a spot weld can be eliminated by completely drilling out the fused part of the sheet metal. It is not as clean and does more damage than the special cutter, but it is cheaper and it gets the job done.
